The last layers contain a much greater volume of material than the inner and outer cores. It has taken days and I’m still not done.
Inner core – 28.3 cubic feet
Outer core – 84.8 cubic feet
Mantle – 141.3 cubic feet
Crust – 197.8 cubic feet
Total volume – 452.2 cubic feet or 16.7 cubic yards
The 2022 biomeiler had a volume of 314 cubic feet. It is amazing what a difference an extra foot of radius makes in the volume. It now looks quite big even though it doesn’t extend into the back yard much farther than before, and it is still no larger than a temporary swimming pool.
Filling these last layers used up the remaining wood chips and sawdust from the previous biomeiler and all of the used litter from the coop. There is still plenty of yard waste available, but all of that is now frozen to the ground.
The mantle is filled, but I ran out of material for the top 12-15” of the crust. My plan is to use wood shavings from the bin across the street to complete the crust. I can replace those shavings at a convenient time later in the winter.
