Double Rainbow

This afternoon, while on an errand to purchase groceries at Fred Meyer’s, I was fortunate to spot this double rainbow decorating the sky.

In Fairbanks, rainbows are more commonly seen than in other places where I have lived.  I surmise that the lower angle of the Sun in the arctic sky may increase the probability of the light shining through the suspended water droplets in a range of angles suitable for the refraction to produce rainbows.  The relatively flat terrain and the scarcity of tall buildings are likely contributing factors, as well.

Even so, a double rainbow is a treat.  I always enjoy seeing the darker band in the sky between the two bows.  This phenomenon is known as Alexander’s Dark Band.  It results from the light in that part of the sky being “used up” creating the two rainbows on its borders.  Unfortunately, this band, though distinct in person, was not captured well in the image.

The other unfortunate thing is that, even though one of the rainbows clearly ends at Fred Meyer’s, there was no pot of gold to be found.  Under the circumstances, I felt there should, at least, have been a sale on my favorite ice cream.  It is now so expensive that I only purchase it when a sale brings the cost within reason.  I hope we sell our chicken meat quickly enough that I have room to purchase a good supply of ice cream during the next sale.

  1. You bring to mind the fact that Haagen Daz had a marvelous sale on their smallest size containers of ice cream a few weeks ago here across the continent from you. I had hoped my son would have a container for each night he was visiting. No luck there.
His son was able to enjoy quite a bit, but tonight my daughter, her husband, and I had some of that leftover product for dessert. We miss him and his family, though the ice cream was excellent!
Good luck with the chickens and ice cream – both.
