In the morning, Melissa and I moved the hens to their summer quarters. Since the front section of the triangle pen has about the same floor areas as the coop, I decided to move the hens to that section, rather than the larger section.
Overall, the triangle pens are 32’ long. Some years ago, I partitioned it to make 22-foot and 10-foot sections. The smaller section was originally used for quail. We stopped doing that because the quail can be quite loud and we don’t want to bother the neighbors. Also, because we now separate the quail for a circular breeding plan. They would be nearly impossible to sort out at the end of the summer. Leg bands don’t work well for quail and we didn’t get around to wing bands before our current shortage of females became significant. [Foreshadowing! More on that, later.] So, the quail will stay indoors this summer.
There are some individual nesting boxes in the front section. The hens like those well enough that adding some curtains should solve the problem of providing darkness during the summer. That solution removes some urgency from repairing the shelter in the larger section. It is on my to-do list to get that done before the layer chicks move in.
