It is Memorial Day, today and there are some yellow flowers blooming in the yard. We haven’t raked the yard since fall and the grass is still asleep. So, these flowers have not had anything to disturb them. They are wildflowers that pop up here and there. I don’t know what they are called, but they are pretty.

In our lot across the street, one of the chokecherry trees is blooming. Another has started.
The willow trees have had their furry bits sprout and the bees are collecting from them. It was a treat to see some big bumblebees zooming around. They aren’t nearly as common here as the type I call Yellow Jackets. Melissa says those are actually wasps and she is probably correct. I call them that only because it is the name for the bees we had where I grew up and, to my colorblind, unconcerned brain, that description is good enough.

Do the yellow jackets in AK make ground nests, too, that cause a major attack force squad when a foot is being placed upon the opening?
