2025 AIC Results

On Saturday, the finalists in the 2025 Arctic Innovation Competition made their presentations to the judges and the awards were presented.

Out of 155 entries, I placed fourth.  All things considered, I am not upset.  The people who placed ahead of me put in significantly more effort than I did.  In one case, it looked like the entry was the result of a career of learning and experimentation.

In contrast, my device resulted from a flash of inspiration that came to me in my driveway, while trying to knock some ice out of the receiving slots in a power cord.  The idea percolated in my mind for a few days until I contrived a general design and a list of raw materials.  A few hours of fiddling with parts, a few hours of work with Fusion 360 and the Bambu printers, and a few hours preparing the presentations was all it took to place me in the finals.

Fourth place is high enough to assure me that my innovation has value, but not so high as to jeopardize my sense of humility.  As a bonus, since I was not in the top three in my division, I remain eligible to compete again in the coming year.  The prize money I received will be put toward funding my research projects and developing another innovation for the 2026 competition.  I am determined to return with an entry even more impressive.

Now, what is this device of mine?  It is a breakaway electrical adapter plug.  The device is designed to make a secure electrical connection while in use, but be capable of separating without damage if the cord is pulled too hard.

In Fairbanks, our vehicles are equipped with electric heating elements to keep the engine oil and antifreeze from freezing.  Some people also have battery chargers and battery heaters.  We have to plug our vehicles into an outlet to power these devices in order that the vehicles are drivable when necessary.

Driving away without unplugging is a COMMON problem.  The damage ranges from bent plugs and damaged outlets all the way to electrical shorts and lost power cords.  A couple of times each winter, someone who will not be named motivates me to solve the problem.  This year, I did!

The University of Alaska Fairbanks operates the Center for Innovation, Commercialization, and Entrepeneurship.  After the AIC Finals were over, I contacted them to seek advice on how to bring my breakaway adapter to the market.  They have not yet responded, but I am sure the process will be smooth, clear, and convenient.
